Summer is coming to an end, and soon we’ll be hosting the season’s final group trip. Many different adventures have been created through unique concepts such as the van tour, the girl-power trips, and, of course, our retreat.

It’s only been a few days since we said goodbye and see you soon to the vanlife community in Lofoten, Northern Norway. Everyone was tired but filled with experiences and adventures that we won't soon forget. One of the participants wrote the following:

On our group trip to Lofoten, we hiked to the tops of majestic mountains, enjoyed warm sauna sessions, and witnessed orcas, moose, and majestic sea eagles. We've eaten simple but delicious food, had conversations with the locals, and, most importantly, lived the authentic vanlife.

The community that has been created across the group is something we are most proud of. Despite our differences, our shared love for travel and adventure has laid a solid foundation for new friendships and unforgettable experiences. It has been a pleasure to be part of.

Summer in Lofoten always kicks off with something special, and this year it was Trine who embarked on the first solo trip of the season. Her adventure began in a van, which became her home on wheels for five days, but Trine's thirst for adventure didn’t stop there.

Extended Stay

After the planned five days, Trine wasn’t ready to leave the enchanting landscapes of Lofoten. She decided to extend her trip by three extra nights. This was arranged in close collaboration with one of our local partners, who ensure that our guests feel comfortable and well taken care of.

About her experience with us, Trine shares the following thoughts:

"I usually always travel alone, but this time I had great company with Willy, the van I traveled with. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to Willy until I arrived at a lovely fishing pier full of local life. North Away planned a perfect route with just the right amount of hikes and time to relax in the van in the evenings. Driving through Lofoten’s landscape gives you a very special feeling, and you feel so small in the most wonderful way. Despite having traveled to many countries, Lofoten is a must-see, and I will definitely return. Overall, the trip has been absolutely amazing, and I’ve been able to immerse myself in the most spectacular nature."

Just as Lofoten’s winter offers the magical polar night, where the sun remains hidden below the horizon, the summer here brings another fascinating natural phenomenon. For around six weeks, the sun never dips below the horizon and lights up the night. To experience the beauty of the midnight sun, it’s ideal to plan your visit between late May and mid-July.

The Midnight Sun Period in Lofoten: The Midnight Sun typically graces Lofoten’s skies from late May to mid-July, with the sun remaining visible around the clock. Expect the Midnight Sun to begin around May 25-28 and last until approximately July 14-17.

Experiences Under the Midnight Sun: Lofoten offers a range of unique activities under the glow of the Midnight Sun, including:

• Hiking Under the midnight sun: Explore Lofoten's mountains in the endless daylight.
• Kayaking: We work with several operators who can assist you.
• Surfing or SUP: Once again, we can enhance your trip with fantastic opportunities on the water.
• Riding: Hov Gård on Gimsøy offers horseback riding on Icelandic horses, a unique way to enjoy the Midnight Sun.
• Golf: Play golf in the endless daylight at Lofoten's unique golf course, where the game never has to end due to darkness.
• Various boat tours: We have local agreements with various boat operators, so don't hesitate to reach out.
• Diving: When the nightlife emerges from the ocean floor, and you can still keep up with it.

The Effect of the midnight Sun on sleep: The constant light of the Midnight Sun can reduce the body's production of the sleep hormone melatonin, making it more difficult to sleep. However, visitors should not experience significant issues, and the unique light patterns provide a rare opportunity to enjoy Lofoten's natural beauty at all times of the day.

Until now, however, the journey has been associated with two primary challenges: it has either been (1) somewhat cumbersome and time-consuming or (2) relatively expensive. Big news: Prices are dropping!

We are excited to announce that starting in April 2024, it will become significantly cheaper to fly directly to Lofoten from Bodø. This is the result of a decision by the Norwegian government to make it easier and more accessible for both locals and tourists to visit this unique part of Norway. At the same time, one of the ferry crossings will be free for those who choose to travel without a car, further easing access to the archipelago.

Improved flight times

But it doesn't stop there. Flight departures to Bodø from Oslo have also been revised to arrive earlier in the day. This change is a huge advantage for those wishing to continue their journey to Lofoten by boat, providing more flexibility and time to enjoy the crossing.
